Be Open to Different Business Opportunities

By Patricia Smith

While opportunities for women have changed dramatically over the past twenty years, women still work in far fewer kinds of jobs than do men. Too often, we are guilty of limiting our own horizons.

As you consider a career change, be open to all the opportunities you see. Dig up opportunities you don't see. I've known women who wouldn't apply to a company unless they had heard of it before, or knew the product line personally. Usually, our own experience is with consumer products or services. This is only a part of the working world.

We are all capable of learning new things, and we are all capable of becoming excited about things we never heard of. The same is true for positions within a firm. Don't limit yourself to jobs with which you are familiar. Just because you have never been a customer service representative in the continuous gutter business, is no reason why you can't consider this a good career move.

Talk to people about what they do for a living, there are many more variations than you realize. Don't leave any stones unturned, and don't reject a potentially great career because the environment is unknown. Awareness is the first step. Small adjustments make a big difference.
