Look Forward, Not Back

We sometimes know that a change in career, job, or assignment is in order. We can sense that the fit is wrong. If a change is truly out of the question, we can usually adjust our attitude. Yet a new job may not be out of the question. It may just be difficult. Every change, no matter how positive, requires sacrifice. At times it seems less painful to remain where we are.
When our circumstances are not nourishing us, we cannot always change them dramatically, or change them quickly. Sometimes we want to find the reason we are in these circumstances at all. Too often we waste precious energy and thought-power figuring out who or what is to blame.
Perhaps we almost enjoy the role of martyr or victim. More likely, we just can't believe our decisions and actions have been so misguided. Chastising ourselves is very painful, but we do it anyway. We also place the blame elsewhere. This exercise gets us no where.
We need to move beyond the reason to the cure. Looking forward instead of back is a beginning. Moving forward is easier when we are focused in that direction. Considering all the paths to a new goal, rather than how we got where we are, allows new opportunities to emerge. Awareness is the first step. Small adjustments make a big difference.
