When One Door Closes...

by Victoria A. Vetere, PhD, HC - Enlightened Life Coach

I have been asked to offer some helpful thoughts about “job loss”. Given that I am an “Enlightened Life Coach & Facilitator”, get ready for some enlightenment on this topic! (Which means prepare yourself for some truly new and different perspectives than those which are popularly held!)

OK - suppose that you are faced with having “lost your job”. Here’s the first key bit of wisdom --- this did not come “out of the blue”! You manifested it! Yes, YOU! No one else can create in your life but YOU! If you really think about it and connect all the dots you will realize that this is true. For many weeks and months, maybe even years, you were feeling unsatisfied with our job. Either you increasingly disliked the one you had, or had been dreaming about another one, or both. In which case you had two options --- quit or be “let go”.

Let’s look at the first of these options. “Quitting” entails quite a bit of courage or at least a certain level of perceived insanity the likes of which would undoubtedly trigger those near and dear to you, especially your spouse and family. Quitting requires you to take total responsibility for your life and choices and workplace satisfaction. How many people do you honestly think are up for this? Including you!

That brings us to option two. Most people opt to get themselves fired, let go, downsized, re-org’ed or whatever their organization calls it. Whatever you call it, it spells “release”. It also spells “victim”, so beware of option two! The “up” side, as most people see it, is that they feel they are not responsible for their ill fate and can therefore lament their fate self-righteously. This often elicits the sympathy of those who would have deemed them insane had they simply quit!!!

Isn’t this an interesting and familiar drama? However an honest process of “connect-the-dots” would reveal quite a different picture. There would be no “victim”, only a person making a series of choices leading to obvious outcomes. The delusion that some hand other than our own is directing our lives is just that --- a delusion. And any possibility of enjoying a conscious, self-directed life of satisfaction and joy is impossible while operating under this victim-based delusion.

So what does the “happy track” look like? It looks like this. Connect the dots and see the patterns in your life. Know that these patterns are all self-chosen, no exceptions. Decide to embrace the opportunity we call “life”. Make choices in full conscious awareness and toward outcomes that you feel positive about. It’s that simple. (Not always easy, but always simple.) Then “miracles” will begin to appear. “Job loss” will reveal itself as “career opportunity”. And you will truly know that when one door closes, another has already opened!

Testomonial: A few months ago, I thought I needed back surgery. I was in constant pain and I had to severely cut back on my regular routine due to the pain. I had a job that I bored me with a company that never kept their promises. I would meet really great guys that I liked a lot and go out with them, then never hear from them again.

90 days later: I have a great job at a company that previously would not even talk me. I am $6000 short of the target salary I wanted – but I am not complaining! I have only slight back pain now. I have resumed my regular routine and I am doing even harder workouts. I have been getting emails from a great guy I went out with a few months ago. He had to leave the country for a few months due his job. He wants to have a serious relationship with me and he wants to take me hiking in Peru when he returns in a couple of months.

All I can say is wow – Victoria you rock! ~Theresa Wilkinson, DigitalEve Diva
