"Theresa,
I got a referral from you last week and I've had a couple other people tell me you referred them to me. I just wanted to say thank you for that. Its very helpful in my line of work and I do appreciate you taking the time to give my name and contact details to people." Lisa Zeller, Spherion Recuiter. |
articlesThe Price of SuccessBy Patricia SmithWhen my son was in the sixth grade, he tested for, and received first chair in the alto saxophone section of his band. While he was happy to be there, and believed he deserved the honor, some of his peers insinuated that he had somehow bribed the band director in order to secure his place. Someone accused him of being stuck up. We talked about this predicament. He was hoping first chair would hold nothing but good things and good feelings. Why were his friends acting this way? Was it true that he wasn't as good as this honor implied? The truth is, success carries a price. This price can be interpreted as failure if we're not careful. This is especially true of women, who are more likely to identify with and exaggerate our failures (see Each of Us, chapter 2.) If we can accept the pain as simply the price of success, rather than anything else, we are better able to live with it and move forward. Awareness is the first step. Small adjustments make a big difference.
